Descrizione

Our home is a cozy cottage with a nautical theme. There is a living room/dining area, kitchen, bathroom with shower and one official bedroom. However there is a second reading/sleeping nook upstairs and another couch/bed downstairs in addition to two single cot type beds. The house is small but very pleasant and ideal for two to three people at most. It is set on two acres with hundreds of acres of forest surrounding it. There is a rustic porch which has antique greenhouse windows which is a great place for a morning cup of coffee or a book. There are large apple trees on the property and a camper with lawn chairs and a outhouse that is now a shed. Despite the isolation there is phone service but no t.v. We do listen the radio for Red Sox games. : ) We do have gas stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer and kerosene heater for cooler days.

Quartiere

There are neighbors on both sides of the cottage who are there infrequently. I rarely see them (due to the trees) or hear them. Most of the time it is so quiet there that the only sounds you hear are birds and the wind. The acreage surrounding our home is forest and if you bring your compass you can walk for miles on paper company lands. (we snowshoe this in the winter) The woods are full of deer, moose, bear, coyote and owls (the latter two who you sometimes hear at night) The stars are especially bright and clear out here due to minimal lights in the area. You travel through six miles of blueberry barrens to get to the property and it is stunning with views in all directions of the expanse of land. This cottage is not for someone who wants alot of commotion. It is ideal for the writer, painter or someone who needs simple beauty and peace. You are close to amenities but in Washington County these are pretty basic but wonderful. The public beach is about ten miles from the cottage, Rogues Bluff State Park. Jasper Beach,(made completely of round stones) is about 14 miles from the cottage. There are kayaking opportunities in tidal bays, rivers and lakes all around. The hiking on the Quoddy Head Coast with lighthouse is stunning (about 35 minute drive) You are within a hour to two hour drive of Campobello Island, Nova Scotia, St. John New Brunswick and an hour from Acadia National Park. In Machias there is a bookstore,antique shop, bank, gas stations and the University of Maine at Machias. (There is also a Rite Aid, Subway, Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds if you must have civilization) There is some of the best fresh seafood and pie made in the world at the two or three restaurants in town. There are excursions available to deep sea fish, cruise the bays and lots of community events. However, it really is like going back in time to a simpler life here. The closest international airport is in Bangor, two hours north but Machias has a community airport within ten miles.

Chi siamo

My husband and I are both educators. Kevin is a sixth grade teacher and I am an elementary guidance counselor and social worker. Our son is 13 and budding musician. We enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking and my husband and son are both excellent archers. I am a voice over actor and rare book enthusiast. We have two dogs and one cat who are family members, but will not bring them on our house swaps. They are spoiled and would monopolize any trip. : ) The cottage is our second home so it it is available pretty much year round with some exceptions for both renting and swapping. We are open to many potential swaps anywhere but my husband definitely wants to see Africa, and I would love to return to the U.K. and go somewhere warm in the winter months. We love kids but the setup of our house is more conducive to adults and older children.

Destinazione

We are available to swap during February and April breaks as well as from mid June to mid August. Our place is available to rent or swap year round.
