Maison

Our first home is a 170 sq mt flat in a recently renovated 16th century building in the central pedestrian area of Udine, a town (approx 100.000 inhabitants) 100 Km east of Venice, 40 west of Slovenia, 70 south of Austria.
The house is located on the third and fourth floor of the family building.
The kitchen, dining room and a small computer room (internet flat connection available) face the alps to the north at the fourth floor. There is a large living room under a 16th century logs roof in the mezzanine (the 3 and 3/4 floor).
Outside the kitchen, a small terrace with barbecue can be used to enjoy summer dinners for parties up to 6 and from there a steep staircase takes you to the upper 100sq mt terrace (unfurnished, at present) which can be seen from google earth.
There are three sleeping rooms, two of which organized on two floors and having a double (ours) and twin (the kids room) futon beds, and another sleeping room on the third floor facing the road to the south. On top, there is a twin sofa bed, in the area below the living room, which can sleep two more people (in case of need).
A maid takes care of the house every day.
Our second country house 40 Km south of Udine in roman Aquileia (google it, please) will be ready beginning 2008 and can also be considered in the exchange, should you prefer a countryside location (or both, depending on the period).

Quartier

The city location is a pretty good base for visiting the north-eastern part of Italy, as well as Austria or neighboring Slovenia. The city is located in a flat halfway between the alps (30 Km) and the Adriatic sea (45 Km), with temperatures ranging from around zero to 5/13 in winter and 12-30 in summer.
Major airports nearby are Trieste (TRS) and Venice (VCE), about 30 and 70 min approximately from Udine by car, respectively. Trieste and Venice can be reached from Udine by car in about 60 and 90 min.
Other major attractions nearby are the Longobard city of Cividale (12Km), Grado (45 Km, an old venetian sea village), Aquileia (35Km, an ancient roman capital), the wine producing area of Collio (15Km) and, should you be fond of food, the San Daniele village (15Km, ham producers).

À propos de nous

We are a couple of Italian university professors, Stefano and Christina, with three well behaved kids aged 2, 4 and 9, and a pet dog, named Epitrapezio (the word comes from Greek, and literally means, "which stands on or next, I'd rather say, the table". We love traveling with the whole lot and sharing different lifestyles.
Christina teaches at the Architecture school whereas I myself teach at the local Engineering school.
Our main activities during the year are, apart from working and taking care of the three young ones + Epitrapezio, hiking, mountain biking, skiing (45 min by car), resting at the nearby beaches in Grado in summer time or spending some time in the countryside.
