Maison

This beautiful, spacious two-bedroom apartment was built in 1800 as part of Edinburgh's New Town and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site zone.

It has a bow-fronted living room with original features and stunning views from three large windows to Calton Hill, the National Monument, James Craig House, Dugald Stewart monument, Nelson's Monument and the observatory.

From this vantage point, one can also see the beautiful and tranquil 11-acre Regent Gardens - the largest private gardens in Edinburgh - the key for which will be provided with the swap.

The apartment - which has refurbished astragalled windows throughout - is tastefully decorated with antiques and art and has gas central heating and a coal fire in the living room.

The master bedroom has a super-king-sized bed and the guest bedroom a queen-sized double bed.

The neighbourhood is very friendly and handy for all amenities, with shops, restaurants and the Playhouse Theatre on your doorstep.

World-famous thoroughfare, Princes St, from where one can view Edinburgh Castle, is a 10-minute stroll away, as is the National Portrait Gallery and Waverley railway station.

The National Museum of Scotland, National Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Mile and the city's Old Town are all a 15-minute walk from the apartment. Holyrood Palace, the Scottish Parliament and Arthur's Seat are a 25-minute walk away.

There have never been any pets in my apartment.

Quartier

The neighbourhood is very lively, with plenty of boutique shops and excellent restaurants in nearby Broughton St and surrounding areas. The Playhouse Theatre - which shows everything from opera to musicals - is one block away. One block in the other direction is the famous Valvona & Crolla Italian deli.

Public transport links are excellent, with several bus stops close by and trains available from Waverley station, which serves all the major UK stations.

But, even though the area is full of life, you can escape to peace and quiet by walking round the corner to either the private Regent Gardens or to the top of Calton Hill, which affords the most spectacular view of Edinburgh; across the Forth to Fife to the North, and to Arthur's Seat and the rolling Pentland Hills to the south.

I'm a journalist, publicist and jazz music manager and travel a lot due to my job, hence the reason I would like to take part in the swap.

As far as interests go, I read a lot, paint and also enjoy making stained-glass artworks, as well as playing piano and trumpet.

I speak a little bit of French and I'm learning Spanish.

Destination

I would like to stay in Manhattan during April and May 2010, though I will consider Brooklyn if the transport links are good.

I may be going back to NYC later in the year, so it would be good to know other available dates as well.
