Maison

Our lovely 200m2 house dates back to 1750 and has a beautiful pigeon tower on the roof - typical of the region. It has most of its original features: working fire places in 3 rooms, terracotta tiled floors, beams and original windows and is furnished with both antique and modern furniture (nothing too precious - children are more than welcome), and watercolours on the walls throughout. Downstairs there is a well-equipped French country kitchen with dishwasher and microwave oven; a large dining area (seats 10 ); a cosy living room with a fireplace, DVD, video screen (no TV – I’m afraid) and B&W Hi-Fi system; an office with fast internet access and a digital piano; master bedroom with high ceilings, ensuit bathroom with clawfoot bath, toilet and wet room. Upstairs there are 3 cosy bedrooms with sloping ceilings and pine floors: 1 very spacious room (25m2) with a double bed, a spacious children's room (25 m2) with twin beds and lots of toys, and another smaller room (15 m2) with 1 double bed, plus a small but beautiful Maroccan-style shower room adjacent to the master bedroom. The upper floor has airconditioning, but the house is generally cool in summer and warm in the winter (there is oil-fired central heating throughout). We can provide a cot, 4X4 pushchair, and most other things you might need for babies. We have games for children, a wide selection of DVDs and videos in English and French and jazz, classical, blues, R&B CDs for you to choose from.
At the back of the house we have 4,000m2 of enclosed garden with a fabulous fully automatic, saltwater gunnite pool (completely fenced off for safety reasons), barn with shady lean-to for outdoor dining, barbecue, an English rose garden, sandpit, and swing and slide area for children. The barn contains 2 adult and 2 children's bikes you can use. Our cleaner comes twice a week and we can probably arrange for her to come during your stay if you would like her to.

Quartier

The house is located in a very quiet hamlet in the heart of the French countryside but just a stone’s throw from the vibrant city of Toulouse. It’s surrounded by fields of sunflowers and wheat in the summer, woodland and rolling hills. We wake up to the sound of our neighbours cockerels and go to sleep with the owls hooting softly in the barn opposite. There are plenty of walks to do directly from the house, through the fields or in the woods or you can borrow our bikes and head for the Fronton winegrowing region just 10 minutes from the house. The nearest village, Montjoire, with its shop/café and organic bakery is just 3 minutes away by car and there are supermarkets, banks, pharmacies and other small shops in the nearby towns. There are open-air, farmers' markets in the villages almost every day where you can buy anything from a corkscrew to a live chicken!
If all this sounds too quiet, our house is just a 30 minute from the very beautiful, dynamic and historic city of Toulouse. Toulouse has much to offer for all the family: parks, museums, an excellent brand new natural history museum and the city de l'Espace. We are also are just a 45 minutes drive from the historic city of Albi and the fortified towns of Cordes-sur-Ciel, Bruniquel and Saint Antonin Nobleval. The mediaeval walled town of Carcassonne is 1h15 minutes' drive, the Meditteranean coast 1h30, the Pyrenees (ideal for hiking or skiing) 2 hours, Bordeaux and the Dordogne just 2 hours and the Atlantic coast, Barcelona and the Costa Brava in Spain just 3 hours away.

À propos de nous

I, Bridget (47), am British, but have been living in France for the last 20 years. I work part-time in communications as a freelance copywriter and translator, but spend most of my time looking after our 10 year old son, Hugo, and 7 year old daughter, Anna. My husband Ange (47) is French; he is an engineer working in the aerospace industry in Toulouse. We have a big black dog, Elwood, Poops, the cat, and Lily-Rose, the rabbit. We'll make arrangement for the dog, but if you could feed the cat and the rabbit that would be great. (If you’d rather not we can arrange for them to go away too.) Ange loves gardening; I love decorating the house and we both enjoy spending lots of time with our children, family and friends, walking, cycling, cinema, good wine and good food, art and architecture and travelling. We have both travelled quite extensively before the children arrived. We all speak French and English and I can get by in Spanish - tho' I'm pretty rusty these days! We are respectful of other people's property and have already had four very successful exchanges in Spain, Sweden, Paris and London and can't wait to organise the next one.

Destination

We are looking to spend Christmas with my family in Surrey, so a swap in Surrey, Kent, West Sussex, our southeast London would be ideal.
