Maison

Our home is a manor house dating in parts from the 16th century, situated in the town of Vermenton once famous as a wine producer and port for floating rafts of logs down the river Cure into the Seine for use in Paris. We have 4 bedrooms all ensuite; King Phillipe XIV of France once slept here when he came with Napoleon to open part of the canal. There is a newly furnished kitchen with all amenities, together with a separate laundry room with washing machine, iron and dryer. We have a beautiful dining room and large lounge, together with a large conservatory which looks onto the private courtyard. equiped with BBQ, table tennis, sun loungers and tables etc. From Easter to end of September we operate the house as a B&B. We have our own private quarters consisting of lounge leading to a double bedroom ,ensuite bathroom (shower,WC,handbasin), large kitchen . Whilst we are operating as a B&B home exchangers are welcome to be our guests (free of charge)on a B&B basis in one of our bedrooms (one -30 sq m -will accommodate a family of 4 - with use of the separate kitchen, and shared use of the dining room, lounge, conservatory, and garden- a great way to meet other interesting people who may be staying with us at the time-mostly tourists from all over the world inc a high percentage of english speakers. Out of season, you would have the full use of the house. You will be able to see pictures of all aspects of our abode on www.15placevoltaire.com

Quartier

Vermenton is set in the valley of the River Cure surrounded by the rolling hillsides of Northern Burgundy. Vermenton is on the main rail line (approx 2 hours) from Paris with regular daily services, so easy access from Charles De Gaulle Airport. Vermenton is a lively village with a population around 1600 people and has a good size supermarket, 2 bakers, butcher, ATM 2 banks, 2 restaurants, a takeaway and numerous bars. Local amenities include 2 beautiful parks bordering the river with a beach area for river bathing. We have a couple of Kayaks and a blow up 2 person canoe available. Vermenton has a canal spur from the main Nivernais canal, with a port for pleasure craft from which wide beam barges can be hired for 2 days+ to cruise the Nivernais canal, which is reported to be the most beautiful canal system in France. The canal tow path is surfaced for cycling; we have several bikes at your disposal. We are at the heart of some great walking country and have maps and walking routes to help you. Within half an hours drive (or in some cases also rail) are the beautiful towns of Auxerre, Vezelay (a World Heritage site) and Avallon. We are also within easy driving distance to Chablis, Irancy, Noyers sur Serein and many more fantastic places e.g. The Morvan (a national park area dotted with lakes),beautiful Chateaux's, and abbeys and Dijon, Beaune & Sancerre. A day in Paris is also an easy affordable possibility thanks to a train that gets you there for 9.30am and gets you back in the evening (we are 5 mins walk from the station). During the summer there are lots of events put on in the locality. The climate is usually great in the summer, hence its suitability as a wine and fruit growing area and even in October the weather is often warm and sunny; a great time to see the wonderful autumn colours of the trees.

À propos de nous

We are Alison & Mark Walters, in our late 50's and we came to live here 2 years ago. We have one son Matthew who is away in the UK at Newcastle-upon-Tyne University studying Psychology.
In the UK we were both self employed, I ran a Conference Agency and Mark was a Management Training Consultant. We are both keen walkers, love sailing, tennis and cycling (although in the season we do not have as much time to enjoy some of these pursuits).

This year we want to spend 3 months in New Zealand and therefore looking to see if we can house exchange for some of this period. Our aim is to find a different country each winter to house exchange (not necessarily at the same time).

Destination

We prefer this exchange to be non-simultaneous. We could accommodate an exchange from March 2010 onwards during the period 1 March - end of October you will be accommodated as B&B guests (free of charge) max 1 bedroom - our family room takes 4 people with full use of a second kitchen and the B&B guest lounge, dining room, conservatory and courtyard garden. From 1 November to February 28 you will have full availability of the main house (we would expect central heating costs/electricity costs during this period to be paid for according to consumption).

Mark & Alison will be arriving in the South Island of New Zealand on 26 November and we are looking for an exchange for up to 3 weeks in January still on South Island and then a further exchange(s) for up to 3 weeks somewhere central or in 2 areas on North Island where we can visit different areas by car. We depart from Auckland airport on 23 February. We have rented a car for the whole period.
