Maison

This classic Vineyard vacation cottage has a charming interior, vintage decor and an historic feel. It has been in my family since 1919, the year it was built as a Sears and Robuck kit house. It is filled with well-loved antiques and original art.

The cottage living room is light and airy with a ceiling fan, large library, high-speed internet and cable TV and fireplace. There is a double bed and a private single bed on the screened sunporch, a double bed in interior bedroom, a single bed in the loft bedroom. The bathroom is downstairs with a shower stall. Here you'll also find the washing machine (the solar dryer -clothesline- is outside.) The kitchen includes all the basic appliances (refrigerator, oven, microwave, toaster oven) but no dishwasher. The large private deck has an eating table with
umbrella, lounge chairs, a gas grill, a beach charcoal grill and gear for picnics. A spacious outdoor shower / bathtub below the deck is a Vineyard tradition. Beach chairs, beach umbrella, kayak and water toys are also included.

Avaliable for NON-SIMULTANEOUS exchange only.
Cottage is available June thru September.
We are available to travel October thru April.

Quartier

This cottage is in a uniquely private and quiet location. It sits on a large lot that abuts 2 wooded town parks, yet is close to town, the beach, bike path and public transportation. The nearby Lagoon is great swimming, clamming, sailing, kayaking and canoeing. A 3-minute walk takes you to a sandy point - great for sunset picnic. The Town of Oak Bluffs is 2 miles away with wonderful restaurants, shops, art galleries, the historic "campgrounds," waterfront parks, harbors and beaches.

This is a excellent location for exploring our unique island. The island's 6 towns each have a distinct character and are rich in history dating back 5000 years. Originally inhabited by the Wampanoag peoples, it was settled in the early 1600's by Europeans. The island was an important whaling center in the 1700-1850's and has been a premier summer resort since the 1880's. Today the pastimes of sailing, fishing, hiking, beaching, birding, shopping and relaxing are what draws many to the island.

There is only one blinking traffic light on the island, no billboards, chain stores, or strip malls. Many farms, public beaches, conservation areas, open-spaces and nature preserves exist.

Island visitors who enjoy a slower-paced experience with deserted beaches and trails, ample parking and good fishing prefer the months of June and September. July and August - the island's "high season." offers hot beach days, nightlife, lectures, art openings, farmers markets, live music, boating, etc. The ocean temperatures become swimmable in early to mid July until the end of September - my favorite month.

À propos de nous

I am an avid gardener, cook, naturalist and traveler. My husband is a history buff, old Land Rover enthusiast, fisherman and hunter. He retired the summer of 2009 and I am on a flexible schedule with my job. We also caretake and live on a large property on Martha's Vineyard for the past 18 years. In 2009-2010 we completed 3 wonderful exchanges - Manhattan, New Zealand, and Hawaii. In 2012 we are wanting to arrange an exchange in Arizona and Washington D.C. but are open for any great ideas!

This beloved cottage was left to me by my great aunt Nan who was an artist and writer. I have rented it lightly to help with expenses and have made it available to extended family, per tradition. Now that we are ready to travel more, (winters only) we have decided to open it up to the home-exchange community. We love this concept as it IS based on the golden rule.

Available for NON-SIMULTANEOUS exchange only.

Destination

THIS MUST BE A NON-SIMULTANEOUS EXCHANGE. We are only able to travel October through April as our caretaking duties keep us here May through October. We live on the island, about 15 miles away from this cottage so we are available for exchange support. Our winter travel dates and destinations are flexible.

We are interested in warm weather destinations to get a break from New England maritime winters: New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, Fiji, Hawaii, Italy, Carribean, Patagonia....Also the British Isles and Washington D.C. are appealing in spring. We are open to ideas. Feel free to suggest your location!
