Maison

We have named our house 'Chasselas' from the grape type that grows across the front of the property and that provides visitors with a delicious sweet white table grape in September. The property dates from around 1850 when it was built as two houses to accommodate vineyard workers and their families who would have been employed by the local cognac producers; hence the two front doors!
Downstairs are two large rooms, one is the kitchen/dining room with a shower/utility room & WC off & the second is the lounge, both look out onto the garden.
At one end of the kitchen are the usual worktops, a double sink unit and floor and wall cupboards that contain all the equipment you'll need for your stay. There is a four ring gas cooker, fridge-freezer and microwave as well as smaller appliances such as a toaster and coffeee maker. At the garden end of the kitchen is a pine dining table with seating for six.
Off this room is the shower/utility room, with a washing machine shower unit and separate WC
Next to the kitchen is a roomy lounge having a high ceiling with exposed beams. Original features include the large stone fireplace, with wood burning stove, and wooden staircase leading up to an upstairs landing. Both downstairs rooms have white tiling that keeps them feeling cool even in in the hottest weather. The lounge is simply furnished having two 2-seater sofas, cane armchairs, another dining table and a selection of antique cupboards. There is a small tv with dvd and vhs player, a hi-fi, and a selection of VHS and DVD films. A Sony Game Boy player and small selection of games is also available. There is a large collection of paperback fiction in the house.
Upstairs, off a landing that runs the length of the house, are 3 double bedrooms and a bathroom all having South facing views over the garden. Each bedroom has twin beds and either a built in or free standing wardrobe. The bedrooms have double glazing so that even the occasional tractor that passes the house in the mornings

Quartier

Breville , 3kms away, is our local village It is believed that people have been living at this location since Roman times and the church dates back to the 12th century.
In terms of facilities there are not a lot on offer in Breville but perhaps more than you'll find in villages of a similair size in the district. There is a post office that recently moved into the mairie, a bar/restaurant and a boulangerie.
The restaurant, open both lunchtimes and evenings, offers a very basic, predictable, selection of dishes with the best deal probably being at lunchtime with their 'menu de jour' at 11Euros. Pizzas are always on the menu. There is internet access in the bar.
The fairly new boulangerie provides an interesting selection of bread a patisseries that are baked in their wood fires ovens. They specialise in whole meal and traditional loaves.
Running through the centre of the village, and under the main road, is a pretty river, more of a stream really, The Solaire. A bankside walk starts by the bridge near which is a large notice board that maps out walks around the area.
Scattered around the district are wine producers who also have a licence to distill their wine and produce cognac. Much of this ends up being sold on to the big cognac houses to be blended and matured in Cognac town. Some remain independant and across the road from the house one of these producers, Bernard Boutinet , is still in business and exports his product all over the world. Amongst the outbuildings he has a shop/tasting room where you can try out his Cognac and Pineau de Charente which is a sweet aperitive.
Bernard' s wife, Claire, is a well known painter and is always happy to show visitors around her studio.

À propos de nous

My wife and I are both retired teachers, although we are still actively involved in teaching in France; she English language and myself giving guitar lessons at our local music school. I'm also involved with several music projects, jazz, blues and Celtic music whilst my wife sings with the La Rochelle Gospel choir. We both speak English and French.
We have three children; the youngest is studying journalism in Paris and the other two live and work in London and Tuscany.
