Maison

This one bedroom apartment, in a security building, with a den/office is the most enjoyable neighborhood of LA. It faces west, so it stays bright with direct afternoon sunshine. We recently remodeled it to provide a sophisticated but comfortable experience. There is new carpeting in the bedroom and den, and maple wood floors in the living and dining areas - so we have a 'no shoes' policy we kindly ask our guests to observe. The bathroom and kitchen have new granite counters, appliances, sinks, etc. Both the apartment and the building are very well kept with a heated pool, dry sauna and laundry machines. The queen bed is a danish platform style, with 4" memory foam top - extremely comfortable with luxurious sheets. The sofa can also sleep one person (max 190cm) and an inflatable mattress (larger than a single bed) is also available if needed. The den is an ideal workspace with a large antique desk. The apartment has wireless connection, a new 47" HD TV (under the living room mirror) and cable. The bathroom has a separate shower and tub. This is 'in town' so there is some street noise...but nothing unusual for city life. Our plants on the balcony may need minor watering in the summer. We also have 2 men's mountain bikes available and information about nearby hiking trails that will give you a view of the city and a great workout too. (NO PETS are allowed in the building, sorry... even with guests.) Cars are also available to be traded - one manual, one automatic. We have a security garage and elevator access.

Quartier

We would not want to live in any other part of LA! This great apartment is just 4 blocks from the famous 3rd st. Promenade, and Ocean Avenue /Palisades Park - which overlooks Sta Monica beach - it is perfect for picnics, jogging, reading or just walking and taking in the view of the coastline. From the park, you walk to the sand below to bike or Rollerblade along the path, or enjoy the many acitivites at the Sta Monica pier -arcades, restaurants, ferris wheel (AMAZING view of the city!). On the 3rd Street Promenade there are dozens of shops, restaurants, cafes, movies, food (regular and organic), music and book stores, the fresh farmers' market on Saturday and Wednesday. You can walk around the and get a taste of every aspect of Calfornia life. The public library is also a few blocks away, as is the YMCA. Nearby is the trendy Montana Avenue with more high end boutques, shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. Unlike the rest of LA, you don't need to drive to get to fun and interesting spots. There are many bus stops nearby so you can get around without a car if you like - to go to UCLA, Beverly Hills, Getty Museum, LA Downtown, Venice, Marina del Rey, etc. About 10 minutes away are great hiking spots with fantastic views of the coast. There are numerous public tennis courts within minutes, as well as golf courses. The airport is approx. 30 minutes by taxi, Laguna Beach and Orange County/Disneyland are 1 hour south, Downtown is 45 minutes, Beverly Hills is 25 minutes East. I first discovered this area when I moved here from NYC to attend UCLA.. and after living in many other beautiful parts of the city, I decided to return to this neighborhood.. it just keeps getting better. There are so many cultural activities to experience in this city. It puts the best LA has to offer at your doorstep!

We are both professionals in our 50's- but are very young at heart! Tom is in the design field working primarily with museums, and I am in the coaching/consulting business. We have both traveled extensively and share a love of natural history and many styles of art, as you can see from the items decorating out home. We enjoy cooking, so you have everything here you need...if you can resist the many restaurants nearby. We have tried to create a home that is comfortable, modern and easy to care for. There are also wonderful neighbors in the building. We take care of our things and will do the same for your home. We are self employed and have another place in LA so we are flexible for dates on exchange. We are open to many places in the world... and always eager for a new adventure. We only speak English (ashamedly!).

Destination

We can do a non-simultaneous exchange, and are flexible on dates but could not travel before late May 2009. We are also open to other locations, this is just the first that comes to mind... so feel free to approach us about any others!
