Maison

Our home is a beautiful, light-filled, freshly decorated pre-war house on a no-through road overlooking a park, in the Headington area of Oxford. We have lived here for 7 years, and have made it into a family home. The house has magnificent light from all directions, and is surrounded by lovely, mature trees and flowering shrubs and flower beds. The ground floor has an entrance hall with oak flooring, a fully-fitted, eat-in kitchen with dishwasher, stove, oven, oak table seating 8, tile floors, and a lovely sunny-morning bay window and ample wood-cabinets, with microwave and appliances. The whole house offers a comfortable, relaxing space, a blend of homely and modern. There are two living rooms (one with a pullout comfy sofabed, which could be used as an additional bedroom), furnished and loaded with books, a piano, football table, t.v., dvd/vcr, wireless internet etc, and there is a bathroom on the ground floor. The house has recently been completely renovated, and combines the best of old and new, with its charming bay windows, fresh and airy decoration. Upstairs, in addition to a bathroom, there is a master bedroom with king-sized bed, bay window and views over the playing field toward the city center, a single bedroom and another bedroom with full size bunk beds (which can be separated). There are plenty of childrens' toys and games, and use of family bikes. The fourth bedroom we currently use as a study. Outside, there is a large family garden, with a back patio which is excellent for outdoor dining, under the blooms of the passion-fruit vines. The house is extremely quiet, as we are on the end of a no-through road that ends in a park adjacent to the house.

Quartier

We are located in Headington, which is a family-friendly neighbourhood of historic and pre-war houses, approximately 2 miles from Oxford's historic city center. Central Headington is a short (5-10) minute walk, with its shops, cafes and amenities. Our house is at the end of a no-through road, so it's quiet and relatively traffic-free, and it's right adjacent to a local park, which has a kids' playing area, playing fields. Ours is a great location to visit in Oxford as well as a base for travel in the area. The neighbourhood is on the London side of Oxford, and buses (coaches) leave from a stop about 5 mins walk away every 20 minutes for London, so we can make it to theatre and back easily in an evening; it is about a 45 minute drive to London and a 45 minute drive to Stratford-on-Avon. We are within the city ring road, and also have easy access to the beautiful countryside surrounding Oxford (Shotover Hill, with its hiking and bike paths; the Thames river; and local attractions in the country include Waterperry Gardens, Blenheim Palace, Stowe Landscape Gardens and the charming Cotswold villages; tourist spots of Bath, Stonehenge, and Bristol within two hours' drive). Within Oxford, we are within walking distance, appx. 5-10 minutes, to local shops and cafes, as well as close to the local library, and Bury Knowle park. A 10-minute bus ride or half-hour walk into the City Center (bus leaves from the end of our road) leads to all the historic sights, the famous Oxford colleges and museums, and a fascinating array of shopping, restaurants, nightlife, and cultural activity. Our neighbourhood has trees, all amenities and is a safe, well-regarded place to live.

We both are on the Faculty of Oxford University, and as academics appreciate the cultural advantages of travel. Our two school-age sons (5 and 8) have travelled widely and are very well behaved and respectful of their surroundings. I am an American living in the UK, my husband a Brit who has lived in Scotland, Nigeria, as well as in the USA.
