Maison

Our apartment is centrally located in Vienna’s second district within walking distance to many of the city’s major sites. We reside in the recently renovated penthouse floor ( 4th) of an old building, accessible by a two-person, key operated elevator or stairs. We do not have air conditioning but rather ceiling fans because we generally have a very good breeze in the summers. Our master bedroom has a king-sized bed, the study two pull-out twins, and the two children’s rooms have slightly raised beds suitable for children around 5 - 15. An air mattress and fold-out bed are also available. We have a modern kitchen with up-to-date appliances and a wonderful coffee machine. We have 2.5 bathrooms and a washer and dryer. We also have Satellite TV and internet access. One of the nicest things about our apartment are the two terraces - a small lower terrace and a larger upper terrace with a 360 degree view of Vienna and its surroundings. The upper terrace has two lounge chairs and a table with four chairs and a sun umbrella - the perfect place to sip a coffee or wine and enjoy the city.

Quartier

Our apartment is in a century old building conveniently located within walking distance (about a 10 minute walk) to Vienna’s 1st district (downtown/old town). In just a one-two minute walk right down the road, you will come to a newly-renovated subway station with the U2 and U4 subways and the recently revitalized banks of the Danube Channel complete with summer beach bars, playgrounds, a swimming pool ship and the twin city liner boats to Bratislava. Vienna’s amusement park and largest nature park (Prater) is about a 10 minute bike ride along the channel. Just around the corner from us, is also the Karmiliter Market where Saturday mornings are all a bustle with Viennese buying fruits and vegetables from the Austrian farmers who come in from the countryside also bringing along homemade jams and honeys. Vienna’s most beautiful landmark – St. Stephans Cathedral – is just a 15 minute walk from our apartment or one – two stops on the subway. By the cathedral is Vienna’s cobbled stoned pedestrian zone lined with sidewalk cafes, boutiques and street artists. Near our place in the second district – about a 5 minute walk away - is the home of the Vienna Boy’s choir - the Augarten Palace and park. This green oasis is an ideal place to relax with a jog or stroll along the labyrinth of paths lined by chestnut trees and flowers. Every New Year’s Walter Cronkite has featured the beautiful sights and sounds of this amazing city. An exchange would give you the opportunity to come see it for yourself.

My husband is an Austrian doctor who works in the field of evidence-based medicine at a university in Lower Austria. I am an American and the legal administrator of an international law firm here in Vienna. We have two sons who attend a bilingual “Gymnasium.” Two Maine coon mixes – one Austrian and one American - Mia and Poldi – complete our family. When were are not working or entertaining our Coons, we enjoy reading, hiking, biking, running, listening to NPR podcasts and, of course, traveling. Everyone in the family - including the cats - are fluent in German and English.

Destination

We would really like to spend sometime on the beach in NC - Wilmington or Kitty Hawk area. Unfortunately, we are not so flexible with the dates. A non-simultaneous exchange would theoretically be possible within on during very specific dates. Nevertheless, we would also be open to other possibilities during this timeframe as well.
