Maison

Our house was built circa 1900 and is built in the traditional Shetland style. It has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a large kitchen/diner, separate dining room and sitting room. There is a utility room with washer and dryer and fridge freezer. The kitchen contains all the usual appliances including a dishwasher. The house is set in a rural location, surrounded by rolling hills on which Shetland hill sheep roam all year. We are close the the seashore, just 2 minutes walk where seals can regularly be seen and sometimes, the odd otter, and there is plenty of walking around the property. We are 30 minutes drive from Lerwick where there are shops, restaurants and tourist attactions. The house is set in 1.2 acres of land, some of which is the garden area, two plots of which are paddocks. Shetland is the perfect place for getting away from it all - the perfect place to write a book, or paint the beautiful landscapes, or even view the legendary Northern Lights
(usually visible in November)

Quartier

We are in a small peaceful hamlet of 5 houses, all of which are spaced apart along a 1.5 mile track which leads to the local shop. Vidlin marina is a 40 minute walk away, where sometimes you can see seals on the rocks. The area is perfect for birdwatching. The outlook from the house is beautiful since we are only a few minutes walk to the seashore. We are surrounded by rolling hills. There are two golf courses near to Lerwick which is about 20 minutes drive away, a local sport and leisure centre with swimming pool ,squash court and gym and in Lerwick, there is a much larger sports complex. There is a small cinema, theatre and lots of small restaurants in Lerwick. There are also a few eating places closer to the house location (closest 6 miles away). The climate has been described in the winter as wild and windswept, and very atmospheric. Temperatures, even in the winter months, fail to go much below freezing due to the warm influence of
the gulf stream.

We are a married couple, aged 60 and 49 who have taken early 'retirement' after living an expatriate life for the past 15 years. We speak English and are currently learning French. We enjoy travelling and our hobbies include walking, reading, arts and crafts, cooking, growing our own veggies, gardening, sailing, and guitar amongst others. We are ideally looking for a house-swap in a peaceful location. We have a cat which we can either take with us or leave at home if someone would be willing to look after her. We are equally happy to look after other people's good natured pets. We do not smoke so our house is only available to non-smokers.

Destination

Dates are flexible. Need a simultaneous exchange. Preferred area is South West France, particularly the Midi-Pyrenees, but open to offers.
