A Late Victorian flat built in the 1890's, measuring approx. 1,200 sq ft., on the top floor of in a two unit building. There are two bedrooms: one is a small front room with a full size bed, small desk and dresser and the other is a much larger master bedroom with a queen size bed and reach-in closet. A formal dining room is connected to a living room with a small gas fireplace. In true Victorian fashion, these two rooms form a double parlour and can be separated (with some difficulty) by closing two pocket doors. There is an eat-in kitchen with a pantry/larder, fridge, stove/oven and dishwasher. There is a small terrace/roof-top deck, with a bench, small table and chair with views of the bay and east bay hills and the neighbor's lovely garden. The flat has hardwood floors and many other period details. The stairs and the hills in the neighborhood would make staying in this flat somewhat difficult for a person with limited mobility.

Quartier

Located just a few minutes walk from the Castro, Mission and Noe Valley districts in San Francisco. A brief 5-10 minute walk (downhill) will take you to a wide variety of shops, grocery stores and bars and restaurants. An electric bus line is as close as 50 meters away (in case you don't want to walk back uphill.) Two metro lines are 10-15 minutes away by foot and they will have you downtown in minutes, about 20-25 minutes total travel time from door to downtown. Like the city itself, this flat is located in the middle of wonderfully diverse and rich neighborhoods, all with a wide variety of families and people of various ethnic backgrounds.

I am a history teacher and speak some Spanish and French and a little Italian. I am in my late 30's (soon to be early 40's). I enjoy fishing, gardening, cooking and making wine as well as studying history (of course) and music and the visual arts. I live here with my partner who is a writer. My sister lives in San Francisco and my mother lives just 50 minutes (by car) north of the bay area in the wine country of Sonoma.

Destination

This could be a non-simultaneous exchange. Dates are flexible yet they must correspond with the academic calendar...winter break (two weeks around New Years), spring break (usually around Easter) and summer vacation (early June through mid-August). For the summer of 2009 I would like to go to the Eolian Islands for one month.
