Overlooking the sea and the mountains across the bay, our 2100 sq.ft cedar house w decks & herb garden is on a quiet tree-lined street near the University of British Columbia. This is the desirable district of Spanish Banks. We are 3 blocks from the beach for walking, swimming, sailing and windsurfing.[instructions available] Tennis courts, gym and community theatre are also within a 5 minute walk.

Kitchen, dining room & sitting room are open plan. Carpeted library[books in English, some French] with fireplace, piano, CD/radio good sound system. Polished oak floors & cupboards, rough cedar walls, stone & glass in architect designed home. 2 study spaces, desks, drawing board, computer.

Firm Queen bed in large carpeted bedroom with walk-in closet, dressing area and full mountain/sea view. Full bath with shower plus powder room for guests. Moveable futons accomodate one or 2 more people. Cable TV & VCR.
Separate laundry room w washer.dryer. All machines except microwave.

The house is comfortably well appointed. A feeling of harmony and welcome.
A herb garden and deck with sea views is just outside the sliding glass doors of the kitchen. The latter is well-equipped but definitely low tech. Electric stove, Le Creuset pans, cuisinart, drip coffee, chinese teapots in straw-lined baskets...

Quartier

Good shops & restaurants, public transport in easy walking distance. University with libraries, museums, gardens [Japanese, & Horticultural] Art galleries, theatres and concert halls within 5 minutes by car, 15 minutes by public transport. Our car is available to our exchange guests if they have insurance. Vigorous sports or casual outdoor activities in easy reach of our house:
5 minutes on foot: the beach, the boats and sailing, tennis gym & community centre.
10 minutes by car: farmer's market,live shell fish, flowers etc.
30 minutes by car: Seymour Mountain for hiking & skiing in breathtaking scenery
20 minutes by car: Closer mountains facing our house across the bay. Well-tended trails for hiking & skiing
3 hours by car: ski, hike, golf, swim at famous resorts of Whistler & Blackcomb
Camp in woods, rent cabins or fancy lodges.
5 hous[car & ferry} surf at Tofino on West Coast of Vancouver Island in the wild Pacific.
Kayaking, cycling or horseback riding at Denman, Hornby, Saltspring or any one of a dozen
magical islands in the gulf between the coast and Vancouver Island. Adventure "schools" train you in such sprots as rock climbing, sea kayaking conoeing and deep sea fishing. Or you can take it easy, find a few treasures along the beaches or in shops and end the day with fine dining. Big boats take you to sea to watch the whales. Vancouver has good music theatre, film and dance. But for parisians, the joys of nature are perhaps the most inviting ones to sample, just because they are so different from the beauties of the Loire or the Luberon.

4 in our party:
John Pass, poet. Governor General's Award 2007 [ the most pretigious literary prize in Canada. His wife, the novelist Theresa Kishkan. John and Theresa live on the fabled Sunshine Coast in a house they built themselves which sits in its own orchard ar the foot of Hallowell mountains near excellent swimming, fishing and shellfish gathering. Their house would be available by arrangement for a week-end as an incentive to explore the wonderful Northwest Coast. You would be welcomed in this wilder part of our province by various friends of ours and theirs. Judah Shumiatcher, Architect and designer of our house in Vancouver.This would be your main exchange home for the month. It is the one I have described here. Barbara Shumiatcher, your correspondent.
