Maison

Try this medieval experience with all modern comforts! We spent a year restoring this 15th century townhouse, which is in a quiet location in a lively village with shops and services. We’ve kept the charm of the house with as many original features as possible intact and furnishings include some antiques. Exposed stones and beams and a superb stone spiral staircase create a unique ambiance.

The ground floor has an elegant stone vaulted ceiling and houses the open plan kitchen/ dining/sitting areas.

The stone spiral staircase leads up to two big bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin), both with ensuite bathrooms. The double bedded room of 35 sq m has a high ceiling and exposed beams, sitting area and French doors opening to a tiny balcony. A 4m x 1.50m Florentine tapestry and 18th century fireplace (non-working) complement the wall of exposed stones featuring a mullioned window. The twin bedded room has a charming 19th century fireplace (non-working) and wall of exposed stones.

A further flight of stairs (steep) lead to the roof terrace with wonderful views across Roman-tiled roofs to the hills beyond. Here is a summer kitchen with fridge, sink, gas BBQ, washing machine and outdoor dining setting.

There's a CD/cassette player/radio with some CD's and cassette, and a library of books.

A picture speaks a 1000 words - ours show 500 years of history, so please take a look!

We are an English/Australian couple from Sydney and have been living here in France for 16 years. This is a holiday home that we normally rent so we can offer either a simultaneous or non-simultaneous exchange.

Quartier

The friendly village has many 14th through to 17th century buildings and a superb 11/12th century church. You'll find several mouth-watering boulangerie/patisseries, mini-markets, bar/ cafes, etc. One of the cafes offers a daily menu of local cuisine. The large Friday market in the village square sells wonderful fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and just about anything else you may need from underwear to shoes to kitchen utensiles, plus lovely items made in Provencal fabrics.

Sophisticated Montpellier, with an international airport and main train station is a 45 minute drive. There are restaurants and supermarkets in historic Pézenas, 5 kms, which is also famous for its antique dealers. Little ports 10-15 minutes' drive have wonderful seafood restaurants and you can have a feast for a surprisingly reasonable price.

The surrounding area is ideal for walking and cycling. Many local sites of historic interest are all around. Further afield, Carcassonne and the Cathar castles to the west , Provencal towns such as Nimes, Arles, Avignon, Aix-en-Provence to the east, can be visited on day trips.

The Spanish border is only an hour and a half's drive away - we often go for lunch for the day!

Our closest airport is Montpellier, but Carcassonne and Nimes airports are only just over an hour's drive. Marseille and Toulouse 2.5 hours.

À propos de nous

Retired English/Australian couple aged 60 and 65. We are looking for swaps of 2, 4 or 6 weeks, the longer the better, between mid-December 2008 and mid/end February 2009. Swaps don't need to be simultaneous.

We offer our house in exchange between the months of October to June.

Destination

We would like to stay in Sydney's eastern suburbs or north shore.
Non-simultaneous exchange.
