Description

Our modern bungalow is situated in a third of an acre of garden off the A87 trunk road 12 miles east of Kyle of Lochalsh in the Highlands of Scotland in the district of Skye & Lochalsh. Whilst close to the road it is very private behind a hedge of trees and has its own driveway and parking. We have raised our family here and consider that this is still very much a family home. The house is bright and spacious and warmed by an oil-fired Rayburn range. The french doors open onto a patio with views over Loch Duich and to the Ratagan hills.

Neighborhood

Our house is ideally placed to explore the Highlands where Inverness is less than 90 minutes away; the Isle of Skye is 15 minutes away and some of the best and most spectacular mountains in the UK are on the doorstep. Closeby is the world famous Eilean Donan Castle last stronghold of the Clan MacRae. A short drive takes you to Glen Shiel the scene of the Battle of Glenshiel where Spanish mercenaries were ousted by government forces in 1719. This is the land of the Gael and is steeped in Scottish history, folklore and legend. Among others, Bonnie Prince Charlie hid out locally and escaped to the Highlands and attempted to keep one step ahead of his pursuers. By the summer of 1746 he had found his way to the Outer Hebrides and Uist with the Redcoats close on his heels. Local supporters decided to smuggle him off the island and asked a young lady for help. This lady was Flora MacDonald from Skye, holidaying with her brother in Milton, South Uist. She agreed to help and so, with Charles in the guise of a washerwoman called 'Betty Burke', they crossed to Skye in a rowing boat. Local food is, simply, delicious and ranges from fresh-out-of-the-water prawns to venison straight off the hill. In the Highlands you will find restaurants of world fame, hotels and inns of renown, a distillery of distinction, and brewers of well travelled ales. Skye & Lochalsh is the working base for a wide variety of artists and craftmakers for whom the west coast of Scotland holds a particular fascination. Inspired and motivated by unique lighting and unusually eroded and sculptured geological forms emanating from extreme weather patterns, they are stimulated to produce a visual feast for the eyes. The area is famed the world over for its mountain challenges, the endurance test of the Five Sisters of Kintail to the pinnacle perils of the Cuillin Ridge . Climbers, walkers and scramblers can embark on terrain offering every possible degree of difficulty or simply take a coastal stroll.

About Us

We are both professional people - I am a health and safety advisor in my early sixties and my wife is a headteacher in her mid fifties. Our pastimes include: ski-ing, cycling, mountain walking and music. Some would say we're mad but we both also enjoy motorcycling and I have been on a number of long trips around Europe. We have three children - all adults - who have long flown the coop. We have a passion for the outdoors but also for beautiful cities (but crowds in moderation!). My wife is a born and bred Scot whilst I am an ex-patriot Englishman having 'only' lived and worked in the Highlands for 26 years.

Destination

This would need to be a simultaneous exchange. We would ideally prefer Colorado having successfully exchanged there a few years ago. But, we are open to offers so long as there is beautiful, rugged, country within easy reach. Whilst our home will easily sleep six we would only require somewhere for the two of us.
