Description

This home is an historical monument yet comfortable and ever so charming. Sleeps 6, but more comfortable for 4, as French Village homes are much smaller than American homes. Wake to the tantilizing fragrance of bread baking in the square next door. Shop for organic vegetables, poulty, cheese, wine at the Saturday market right around the corner in the medieval covered market place. Drive, hike or bike through artistically cultivated vineyards to the many many historical spots including abbeys, castles, Roman acheological sites, or just hang out in the town cafes. The Mediterean Beaches are a short drive away, as are the delightful cities of Carcassonne, Narbonne, Perpignan, Montpellier and Toulouse. Spain is a short 2-hour drive. On the way visit Collioure - a jewel of a 4-cove fishing village where the kings of Majorca built their 12th century castle and Matisse and Derain started the Fauve movement.

Neighborhood

The village of Lagrasse is classed as "One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France", and dates back many centuries. The abbey was founded in 889 with an existing parchment granting its charter "signed" by Charlemagne located in the archives in Carcassonne. The winding streets hide many stone homes that have been lovingly restored, while the tree-lined "Promenade" opens its cafes and restaurants to locals and visitors alike. In the summertime there are several concerts, antique faires and a well-known book fair. There are 2 grocery stores, one with a gourmet deli, and several restaurants. Many artists exhibit in their home galleries. There are several boutique vintners in the village and lots of wonderful wine tasting nearby.

About Us

We come to Lagrasse in Spring and Autumn to bike, paint and cook. As this is our second home, the house is available summer and winter. One of us speaks French fluently, the other gets along very well with sign language! There are however, many English residents and a few Americans.

Destination

We are flexible in our exchange dates for "La Maison Lautier" as it is our second home. The exception is spring and fall, when we are there. Our desire is to find a warm winter escape, as our primary home in the mountains in Colorado is only accessible by snow-mobile for several months from around December to March.
