Description

Beach Cottage — nestled below large cedars and Sitka spruce trees on acreage with Southwest-facing ocean frontage, you'll find a nicely furnished, self-contained two-bedroom house with huge windows and a cozy woodstove that heats up the living space, dining area and kitchen. The North-facing large master bedroom is nestled in the forest, with ensuite. The Southwest-facing 2nd bedroom (or office or den) has both ocean and forest view, and its own door out to the cedar deck. Outside you’ll find a cedar deck around the house, surrounded by native shrubs and a beautiful path to the ocean below. A nearby beach allows launching of canoes or kayaks.

Neighborhood

Surrounding area —explore the nearby backroads and lakes on mountain bikes or on foot. The Juan de Fuca Ridge runs from Sooke to Port Renfrew and reaches elevations of several hundred meters with spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains in U.S.A. Closer to the ground, you'll find rare glacier lilies and other alpine flowers, possibly even catch a glimpse of a black bear or cougar. Rent a kayak or charter a boat for salmon or halibut fishing in Sooke or Port Renfrew; take a canoe to nearby rivers and lakes; surf in Jordan River's world-class swell; or wind-surf at Tugwell creek.

Flora and Fauna — native ferns, salal, wild cherry and elderberry bushes provide shelter and food for songbirds. Bald eagles frequent the giant spruce trees; cormorants and kingfishers set out looking for herring; river otters playfully slide down the bank to feed in the kelp beds. Travelling sea lions, dolphins, orca and grey whales pass through this part of the Juan de Fuca Straight. A harbour seal will pop up its head on a calm and sunny day, watching you with puppy eyes. Loons congregate when breeding duties in northern lakes are over. At the water’s edge, below high-tide line, you'll discover limpets, sea anemones, an assortment of kelp and seaweeds - edible and choice to some. Orange and purple starfish feed in the mussel beds.
