Description

Our home was built around 1580, it retains most of its original features - thatched roof, oak beams, open fireplace. The interior of our house is very special.

The house has four living rooms, four double bedrooms, a bathroom with shower and bath, separate toilet. A large kitchen has a traditional Aga cooker and views across the countryside. Despite being so old, it has all the modern conveniences with digital TV, wireless broadband and central heating.

There is a small but attractive garden. In the garage there are two Mountain bikes and a four person Canadian style canoe.

Neighborhood

The house is in All Cannings, a quiet English country viilage. Thatched houses, flint and chalk walls, fields of corn, sheep, cattle. From the house there are walks into the chalk downlands and along the Kennet and Avon canal. The village has its own small shop and is just five miles (8 kilometers) from the nearest town of Devizes, described as a jewel of Georgian architecture and providing numerous supermarkets and other interesting shopping. There is a dial-up Bus service. The train station to London/Devon is only twenty minutes away.

The scenery here is just stunning. A very open landscape of hills and trees. Two miles down the road is one of Wiltshire's ancient White Horses carved into the chalk hillside. 200 metres from the house is the Kennet and Avon canal, restored in the 1970's and navigable from Bristol to London, over a distance of 200 miles. You can use our canoe to paddle to a canalside pub three miles away.

If you are into hang-gliding, there is a club that uses the hills overlooking the village. Fishing is available on the local rivers and canals. There is a riding school in the next village. If you are beer connoisseur then you will want to visit the Wadsworth Brewery in Devizes, which still uses traditional dray horses to deliver barrels of beer in the town.

Within an hours drive are the spa city of Bath, Salisbury with its majestic cathedral, Lacock (film set for Jane Austen) Bristol with its maritime history, the beautiful Cotswolds, Oxford and much more. In reality you do not need to travel much, as the house is in the middle of the most fascinating area full of pre-historic sites such as Stone Henge, and Avebury stone circle. London is just 150 miles away by motorway or train.

About Us

My name is Peter. I am 55 years old. I live with my wife Anne aged 52. I am a consultant specialising in public sector services but I am also a semi-professional photographer and spare time rock musician. Anne is a complementary therapist, specialising in Cranio-sacral therapy, Reiki and relaxation techniques. Neither of us smokes.

The exchange would be with just myself and my wife, unless the exchange house was big enough to invite some trusted (adult) friends along.

We have a large, friendly dog and two cats. These can easily live in the local kennels if you do not want their company.

Public transport is not very frequent so we would be prepared to offer a car for use.

Destination

We have arranged an exchange to the USA in June 2008. We would be interested in a short exchange in the UK or Europe later on in the year.

We will be planning a longer trip again in 2009.

We have had lots of interest from Australia and New Zealand but we have decided that the flight is too long.

Best wishes.
