Description

In the heart of Prince Edward County wine country just north of the shores of Lake Ontario is the Gilead Schoolhouse. This historic property was built in 1877 and served as a one room schoolhouse for many decades. It has now been converted into a comfortable three bedroom home and retains much of the original charm and character. The living room features twenty two foot cathedral ceilings with the original slate black board and the teacher's platform. The bell in the tower on the roof can still be rung from outside! This lovely one acre property is bordered by old split log fences and is surrounded by open fields on all sides ensuring quiet and privacy.

3 bedrooms - 1 queen bed in master bedroom. Set of twin bunk beds in 2nd upstairs bedroom. Double bed + single loft bed and cot in main floor bedroom. Double air mattress also available. Sleeps up to 8.

2 bathrooms - 4 piece bathroom on main floor + 3 piece ensuite bathroom with claw foot tub.

Well equipped L-shaped kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, and water cooler.

Open concept kitchen & dining area; harvest table seats 8.

OTHER FEATURES - satellite TV, DVD, VCR, wireless internet, washer/dryer, gas BBQ & outdoor patio with furniture. Beach pass to Sandbanks included.
Bicyles & cross-country skis provided; Millenium Trail entrance is located 1 km away. Note: bike helmets are not provided. Backyard treehouse. Fully winterized.

THIS IS OUR SECOND HOME. WE ALSO HAVE A COMFORTABLE 3-BEDROOM HOME IN THE HEART OF TORONTO, RIGHT NEXT TO HIGH PARK, WHICH IS AVAILABLE FOR SWAP (see listing 19497).

As it is 200 kms from our house in Toronto to the schoolhouse in Prince Edward County, and there is no public transportation directly there, we would be prepared to offer our car for exchange as well if necessary.




Neighborhood

The Gilead Schoolhouse is situated only 2 minutes from the lakeside town of Wellington and its public beach and conveniences. In the other direction is Bloomfield only 5 minutes away with its restaurants and shops. The majority of the County's wonderful wineries can be reached within 10 minutes. Many other County attractions are just minutes away: Sandbanks Provincial Park, the Black River Cheese Company, Historic Picton with its shops and restaurants and much much more.

This wonderfully charming house is available all year round and sleeps 6 adults comfortably. Bicycles of all sizes (including for the kids) are available for use in the summer (bring your own helmets) and cross country skis in the winter. A Sandbanks beach pass is also included with rentals.

About Us

We are a professional couple aged 39 and 41 with 2 children, a boy and a girl, ages 13 and 17. We usually travel with the children, although sometimes we manage to get away just the two of us. If the exchange home is large enough to allow, we might like to include a couple of (trusted) adult friends. We have done a home exchange to Europe 3 weeks with the two children, and found it to be a fantastic way to travel. We would be very respectful of your home, and treat it as if it were our own.

In addition to the schoolhouse vacation home in Prince Edward County (featured) we also have a comfortable 3-bedroom home located one block from High Park in Toronto. This home sleeps 6 comfortably; up to 8 with pull-outs and is located directly on the subway line close to all Toronto amenities/attractions. Our city home (listing 19497) would also be available to swap if you would like a city or combination of city/country vacation.

We have two friendly, low-maintenance cats who live at the Toronto house and spend a great deal of time outdoors. However, they can easily live in the local kennel during the exchange if you do not want their company.

Destination

Looking for a home to exchange in Europe (Barcelona would be our first choice) for two weeks any time in the summer of 2012. We have a home in Toronto and a country home 2 hours outside Toronto in an emerging wine area. Could exchange for a combination of both.

Our first language is English, we speak basic french.
