Descrizione

We live in a townhouse on three floors with garden, in a quiet area, 15 minutes walking distance from the railway station and city centre, 10 minutes walking distance from the swimming pool. Organic market on the corner of the road, supermarket at the end of the main street. Very important: we have three lovely cats to take care of.

Quartiere

Valenciennes lies on the confluence of the Escaut and La Rhonelle rivers. It offers a lot of outdoors activities (Base de Loisir and Regional Parcs). You can use it as a base for one day visit to cities like Lille (50 kms.), Paris (200 kms.), Brussels (100 kms) and many others either in France (Arras, Douai) or Belgium (Gand, Bruges).

Valenciennes was almost completely destroyed during World War II, and it has a few surviving monuments:

- The façade of the city offices, which managed to survive the bombardments of the war;

- Notre-Dame du Saint-Cordon, to which there is an annual pilgrimage;

- La Maison Espagnole, the remains of the Spanish occupation, which ended in 1678;

- The Dodenne Tower, the remaining part of the mediaeval fortifications after Charles V ordered them reduced:

- The "Beffroi", a large, pin-like monument 45 metres (148 ft) in height, was built in 2007, on the site of the former belfry, destroyed in 1843.

- The ValenciennesFine Arts Museum built in 1801, and has recently been greatly extended.Its origins are closely linked to the artistic background of the town: an Academy of Painting and Sculpture was founded here in 1782 whose collection is accessible to the public. It has an outstanding collection of 17th century Flemish paintings and 19th century French sculpture.The Flemish collection includes religious works by Rubens, Martin de Vos, Caspar de Crayer, Jansens, and Jordaens. 18th century French paintings include a rare portrait by the locally-born painter (c. 1716) Antoine Watteau. The star of the 19th century French collection is the work of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux - also born in Valenciennes. You can see 150 of his scuptures, including the famous bust "la Négress", as well as many of his paintings and drawings.

Chi siamo

We are a family of three, two adults and one nice young boy of 11, who moved from Bologna, Italy, to the North of France. I work at the European Railway Agency which has its headquarters in Valenciennes. My husband is learning French. We like exhibitions, films, books, arts and antiques, basketball, gardening and travelling, of course. We think that house exchange is the best way to visit new places and know new culture. We speak Italian, English, French, German and Spanish. We are experienced exchangers, having concluded six home swaps so far.
