Maison

The house is a deceptively large, architect designed, cottage-style home with 4 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large rear decked garden, fully fitted kitchen, wood-stove, under floor heating, large living/dining room and ample storage. It is fully furnished with bedlinen, towels etc supplied and includes outdoor patio furniture, recliners, bbq, etc. There is a large planted rear garden complete with decking on three levels. The front of the house is east facing and the back faces west.

The house is situated on the east end of the island with spectacular views across to Clare Island and Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo stretching to the 12 Bens in Connemara. It is right on a pristine white sandy beach which is sheltered and very safe for bathing. It is located about 1 mile from the harbour and about 15 minutes walk from any of the three hotels or four pubs or shop/post office. We keep a car on the island which you would be welcome to use, as well as having two bicycles there with plenty more available for hire.

There is unlimited wireless broadband internet access as well as a TV, DVD and cable television.

The island itself is regarded as being enchanted with many artists, actors and writers having visited it and lived there including the writer Tom MacIntyre, the poet Ted Hughes and his wife Sylvia Plath, Seamus Heaney, the actors Peter O'Toole, Nicholas Cage, Sharon Stone to name but a few.

The climate is mild and enjoys long clear days during the summer months. A ferry operates 3 times per day during the summer and twice per day off season which makes the island very accessible all year round.
Other attractions close by include Connemara, Clifden, Roundstone as well as Galway city which is about one hour away.

Quartier

Inishbofin is situated 7 miles off the coast of Connemara, Co Galway and takes 30 minutes to reach by daily ferry. It is about 4 square miles in size and it permanently populated by 180 people which expands to about 500 during the summer months. In english the name translates to the 'Island of the white cow' referring to the myth about a man walking meeting a woman driving a white cow, the cow walked into a lake and the lake turned into Inishboffin!

The island is a quiet, close knit sea faring community, largely self sufficient. There is a farmers market every Wednesday where local produce is sold including fresh baking, eggs, jams etc. There is a school, church, community centre (with indoor sports facilities), library, internet cafe, shop, post office etc. The community is steeped in traditional music with many musically renowned inhabitants including Dessie O'Halloran and Andrew Murray. The are several music festivals during the year and the Summer Tuesday night sessions are very well known and popular, and attract many talented musicians including Sharon Shannon, Eleanor Shanley, De Dannan and so on.

The island has a well kept network of sealed roads and is generally quite flat with only gentle hills, which makes it perfect for exploring on foot or by bicycle.

Other attractions close by include Connemara, the championship golf course at Ballyconnelly, Connemara National Park, Clifden, Roundstone as well as Galway city which is about one hour away.


On the Island, there are 3 hotels, 3 pubs, 2 cafes, 20 miles of unspoiled white sandy beaches as well as sea cliffs, rare birds, sea-fishing – both in shore and off shore, walking and diving and so on. It is a haven for walkers and nature lovers.

John, a lawyer in Galway city, built this house over 9 years ago having been a regular visitor to the island for the previous 6 years. Noeleen, his girlfriend, is an accountant and both enjoy travelling, a night out with friends or a good bottle of wine! We are regular visitors to the island and although this house is a second home (we live on the mainland for work reasons), it is very much a lived in house which we would regard as home.

Destination

We would particularly like a similar island or beach home in the South of France, Sardinia, Italian riveria etc (Europe) or Marthas Vineyard, Cape Cod, Long Island, Catalina Island or similar in the US. Otherwise we are very open to locations, dates are completely flexible and it can be a non simultaneous exchange.
