Description

The charming carriage house is on the historic register of properties in the city of Lowell, Massachusetts, birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. It is located on a quiet, tree-lined street, but a short , ten minute walk to downtown where there are several museums, and a vibrant arts community. The summer music series is an excellent family outing, and the famous (free) Lowell Folk Festival is in its 23rd year - always the last weekend in July. There is a commuter train to Boston (which is 25 miles to the south). City buses run right by the end of the street. The mountains of New Hampshire are a 1 1/2 hr. drive to the north. Beaches are an hour's drive to the east. Other New England states are easily reached in a couple of hours: Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island. New York City is 250 miles south by car or commuter rail from Boston.
The house is a totally open concept downstairs, very airy with several skylights, and quite spacious. It has an atrium entry way, living room, dining room, family room, galley kitchen, bedroom and bathroom on the 1st level. The second level has a master bedroom with a balcony, a bathroom, and a large second bedroom/sitting room.
Outside the family room is a patio with a large grille, a large deck with an outdoor fireplace on it, and a small side yard. There a two storage sheds on the property.
There are two cats: George and Penelope. They are happy to be outside most of the time in the summer.
The house would accommodate a family with up to three children. The neighborhood is lovely for taking long walks around it. It has older established architecture, mainly Victorians and colonials, and has always housed the city's upscale residents. Most of the homes were originally built to house mill owners or their foremen. They have not fallen into disrepair and today house single families who have lovingly restored them.
Direct Dish TV (2).

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is called Belvidere. It is essentially situated on two hills which overlook the city. It is a lovely walking neighborhood: scenic and safe. The Merrimack River runs through the city and there are walking trails along the river for several miles. The downtown has been revitalized in many exciting ways. The old mills have been converted into condos, art studios, and museums. There are two colleges in the city: Middlesex Community College (a 2 yr. school) and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (part of the 4 locations that make up the Mass. University system). There are always interesting programs going on the the schools and at Boarding House Park - the summer music series venue. A short walk from the house is Shedd Park, a great place for kids with new playground equipment, tennis courts, ball fields, swimming pools. Kittredge Park is literally around the corner. Its gazebo is a great place to sit and think on a hot summer day. I very seldom leave New England in the summer because everybody comes here to vacation!

About Us

I teach writing at the local community college. I live in this house by myself, but formerly shared it with my 2 children (now grown) and my late husband. There's only one place that could tear me away from New England in the summer, and that's Ireland!

Destination

This should be a simultaneous exchange. I am open to any location in Ireland. I am very willing to exchange my house for a small apartment or smaller condo or townhouse.
