Description

Our spacious apartment (90 m2) is located in a 19th century building in the historical neighbourhood Esquilino, just next to the metro Station Piazza Vittorio. There is a fully equipped kitchen (but no dishwasher!), bathroom with tub, inner balcony, a children bedroom with bunk beds while our bedroom is accommodate on a mezzanine, a bright living room and a library room where you can find everything you need to know about ancient and modern rome. We have no airconditioning (ceiling fan in the bedroom) but because the ceilings are very high (3,70 m) and the walls quite thick, the apartment is warm in winter and cool in summer. With a five years old boy around, the apartment is children friendly with a huge Thomas the train play set, many DVD in English and Italian and lots of children books and toys.

Neighborhood

The Esquilino, once one of the seven hills of ancient Rome, is one of the most historical neighbourhoods of Rome with ancient ruins, churches and museums all within walking distance. Nero's Golden Villa and the Colosseum are just few minutes walking and because of its vicinity with Rome's main train station the area is well connected both to other areas of Rome and other centers. Piazza Vittorio and the Esquilino are today a vibrant multiethnic community characterized by an active cultural life, see for example, the multiethnic music group "orchestra piazza vittorio" and very popular among actors and movie directors who often choose it as the location of their movies (Riprendimi by Anna Negri). Just in front of the apartment, there is one of the best and cheapest food markets of Rome where you can find Italian as well as exotic specialties, vegetables, fruits and spices.

About Us

We are a family with a five years old son. I am professor of Classics and Archaeology at John Cabot University in Rome while my husband is professor of Byzantine and Islamic History. We have a lot of experiences of travelling and living abroad but we don't like mass tourism and are very excited about the idea of exchanging homes with other families. We have relatives and friends who live nearby and we will be happy to introduce them to you to support and direct as you adjust to our place. Should you be interested, we can also offer you accommodation in Tuscany (Prato near Florence in the summer months and a skicottage on the Apenines in winter for a maximum of 6 people). We are mostly interested in the possibility of spending some time near the sea but we are also open to explore cities and areas rich of history and culture.
We both speak English, French, German, Modern Greek, some Arabic and Italian, of course.

Destination

In August 2009 we would like to spend some time (10-30 days) in Oxford or Cambridge to do research.
We are also open to different destinations and dates. Surprise us with your offer and we will always guarantee an answer.
