Traditional home in a beautiful Alpine Village

Europe / Austria / Steiermark / Moenichwald

Close To   Vienna, Graz (100 Kms)

Description

Our home, or 'Hausl' as we call it (means "little house" in dialect), was inherited by my wife from her parents who also had a farm six kilometers up the mountain. It is nestled near the edge of the village on the north side of the valley. With its stone and earth morter foundation, thick walls, wooden floors and traditional spiral staircase it has a character all its own. The living room with its large turkish rug, comfortable sofa's and chairs, high windows and beautiful blue ceramic free standing fireplace give one a warm and comfortable feeling.
Both bedrooms are upstairs. The master bedroom has a finely crafted, hand oiled king size bed, leather sofa, armoire, dresser, etc. A window/door opens out onto the balcony overlooking the valley and the lower part of the village.
The second bedroom has the same ameniteis but two single beds instead, and does not open out onto the balcony, though the window opens out onto the same view.
Whether you would like to enjoy winter sports, such as sking the local mountains, or lounging around the swimming lake in the village durring the summer, Moenichwald is a neat and orderly village with kind and hospitable residents that will make you feel at home.

Neighborhood

Moenichwald, our Alpine village, in 1994 won the award as the prettiest flower village in Europe and maintains that standard to this day. It rests at the foot of the eastern most mountain of the alps allowing it milder winters and better weather in the summers. Our 860 year old village is small and full of tradition but has all the convinces one needs to enjoy life. The village residents, including the surrounding farms, numbers less than a thousand. The surrounding mountains and forests are filled with nature to be seen and enjoyed by the many hiking trails througout the area.
Though Moenichwald is off the beaten track, a drive of one and a half hours will find you in the heart of Vienna to the North, or Graz to the South, Austria's second largest city.

About Us

I am an American and my wife is Austrian. I grew up traveling the world and living abroad. Durring one of our family adventures I met my wife of 19 years while sailing around the world for six years on our classic 57 foot yawl.
My wife grew up in her village of Moenichwald and later moved to Graz, Austria where she received her degree in biochemistry.
After our wedding, high up the mountain that she grew up on, we spent some time in California before moving to Fiji in the South Pacific for four years. The first one and a half years of this period we built a 36 foot traditional Fijian double hulled sailing canoe right out of the jungle on a remote island, the likes of which had not been built since 1913. We then sailed it over 1,000 miles throughout Fiji for two and a half years before finally selling it to the Fiji Museum prior to our departure.
Back in Austria we settled down for awhile. In between various travels we had two children. Our son is 5 and our daughter is 8, both born in Austria.
Some time after the birth of our son I was beginning to get anxious for a new and serious adventure. I mentioned this to my wife one day and in reply she asked what I had in mind. In short I said 'Let's go to California and get our pilots licences, buy a suitable plane and take our time flying it around the world'. She liked the plan so off we went. At present we plan to spend a few month in California and then head south. We want to see South America, especially Chile.
