Description
A house in the treetops! Our home is an Arts and Crafts style house like nothing you've seen. Built 40 feet above ground, accessable via a ground level, 50 foot catwalk, it is a paradise of green. Located in historic Wyoming Valley, home of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, our house was designed and built by one of the master's students. Two large glass walls showcase wonderful views of oak and aspen trees. The large deck is perfect for a mid-summer picnic. The ground floor is one large open space with 15 foot ceilings and kitchen, dining, living space and one bath. The bedroom, with king size bed and master bath are located in an open loft overlooking the main level. This is truley a unique and beautiful house and we are lucky to be it's stewards.
Also within 10 minutes drive is the picturesque town of Spring Green, the world renowned American Players Theatre, and the crazy but loveable House on the Rock. Is golf your thing, we are less than 10 minutes from an 18 hole golf course designed by Trent Jones. Nature? We've got that two, with two state parks and access to the beautiful Wisconsin river also within 10 minutes drive (we'll ain't this place a geographical odditity, 10 minutes from everywhere?). Really, a very easy place to spend a relaxing vacation with plenty to do, and yet you may find yourself merely enjoying our home and walking or biking (two bikes come with the house) in our beautiful Wyoming Valley. Located in the "driftless region" of Wisconsin, so called because the glaciers of the last ice age which flatten most of the upper mid-west decided to leave this area alone, hence it's charming valleys and rolling green hills.
Neighborhood
Want peace and quite? Want to wake to bird sounds, fall asleep to the rythmic thrumming of peeper frogs? We have the place! And while Wisconsin is known for it's mosquito's, we have a Mosquito Magnet to keep them at bay.
We are located about half-way between two very different towns, Dodgeville is a large town of over 5,000 people and houses the world headquarters of the clothing company Land's End. It has a hospital, several grocery stores and a charming main street with several good lunch spots, as well as a nice flower shop and gift shops. It is about a 12 minute drive.
Spring Green is a smaller town of about 1,400 people and supports a fairly brisk tourist trade. It has several restaurants and coffee shops as well as fine dining and many nice shops featureing local and regional artists. It also has a small grocery store as well as a nice natural foods store. Live music can often by found at the local joint, The Spring Green General Store, on most Saturday afternoons, and they also have great java and free wireless internet (not that you will need it, we have it at home).
About Us
We are a married couple in our mid-thirties. We have traveled quite extensively thoughout the US and Europe. We love cats and have two who will be here during the exchange, we would love to take care of your cat's, too. We are in the antiques business. We have done a lot of work to the house ourselves, or I should say my husband has. He is extremely handy. You may find that squeaking door hinge in your house has been silenced while you were away! Unfortunately we only speak English, although my husband has some Spanish. I play the gitaur a bit and you are welcome to play mine while you are here. We are avid (vegitarian) cooks and have quite a few kitchen toys and a large selection of spices. We are also big tea drinkers and have a tea selection to rivial most tea rooms (as well as a hot water tap for instant gratification). We do a lot of work on-line and have satellite internet as well as satellite TV and Tivo. We don't have kids, but we do love them and would welcome a family with one child, we could provide a pack-n-play or air-matress for the first floor, but bear in mind that privacy is limited in our house due to the open design. We are both bike riders and have one hybrid road/dirt bike and one mountain bike, we also provide two helmets. The hills around here are challenging and would be recommed for intermediate bikers, many bike tours and races use this area in the summer for their events. Please feel free to ask us questions about us, the house or the area.
Destination
Due to the nature of our steep driveway and snowy Wisconsin winters, we are only offering our home for exchange during the summer months. This is when our area is really happening as well, tours of Frank Lloyd Wrights house and studio are only available in the summer, and our outdoor classical theater runs mid-June to early October. There are also several gormet "underground" restaurants locally that operate outdoors in the summer months. We would like to have a simultaneous exchage but may be able to work out other dates, we are normally gone several weeks during the summer. If someone in a very warm climate wants to escape the heat and flee north, we would love a week somewhere warm come January or February. Please bear in mind that we do have two lovely and sweet kitties that will be happy to share their home with you in exchange for some kibbles now and then. If you are a culinary enthusiast, bear in mind that this area produces some of the best local cheese, meat, produce and beer in the US.
