Description

The house, built in 1914, is in a quiet street ten minutes walk from Cremorne shopping centre. It’s mostly on one floor, with pleasant outlooks over the leafy neighbourhood as it falls away on the southwest side of the house towards the waters of Middle Harbour. There’s a double carport on the street and established gardens front and back, mostly low-maintenance native trees and shrubs, well screened from the neighbours (all perfectly friendly and well behaved) and making welcoming oases for the outdoor living the climate invites much of the year. Inside, there are three bedrooms (two with double beds, one with two single beds), a music studio with a grand piano, a through sitting/dining room, a family room and, up a short flight of stairs, a good sized study with a box room. The eat-in kitchen has everything that opens and shuts, as we say here, except we haven’t found space for a microwave yet. There’s a laundry space with a W.C. off it, a shower room, a workshop/ indoor garden shed and a bathroom with shower and W.C.
There are two cats to look after, Tiddles the female tortoiseshell, 17 years old now, and Alex the tawny Abyssinian male, 12. A neighbour’s young son would come and feed them if you are away for short periods. Of course, we’re happy to look after your pets, too.
The car is a Ford Festiva 5 seater, manual drive.

Neighborhood

Our home is in Cremorne, a pleasant residential part of Sydney, on the north side of the Harbour, six kilometres from the city centre across the Harbour Bridge. It’s convenient for everything, shops, transport, schools, beaches, entertainment and recreation facilities. The main campuses of the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales are respectively 11 and 16 kilometres south on the other side of the Harbour. Macquarie University is 14 kilometres to the west and the University of Technology 4 km north. The State Library, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Museum are five or six kilometres away in the City. The Blue Mountains (elevation about 1000 metres) lie about 100 kilometres to the west.

About Us

Elizabeth, bilingual French/English, teaching piano at the Conservatorium of Music at Sydney University, and husband Tom (English impeccable, French passable), retired airline manager, want to spend six months plus in the south of France this year (2008) to make sure we really do want to retire there permanently. Our grown-up children (two daughters) live in Edinburgh with their families.

Destination

Montpellier is our first choice but we can consider any of the bigger centres of Languedoc-Roussillon and the Côte-d’Azur. Ideally, the house would be like our own, close to local shops, services and amenities and fifteen or twenty minutes drive to the city.
We need a simultaneous exchange but our dates are quite flexible - our aim is to spend several months before we have to come back to Sydney soon after Christmas.
