Neighborhood

Large common (public open space) across the road, beach and leisure facilities a few minutes' walk away. Lovely scenic countryside and coast on the doorstep for walks and drives. Easy access by road and rail to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen for day trips. Ski fields 1 hour by car, lots of golf courses nearby. Great place for kids. Local harbour and museum, mini railway, tennis courts, trampolines, amusement arcade, paddling pool etc all within walking distance.
Arbroath has its share of Scottish history - the awe-inspiring ruins of 12th-century Arbroath Abbey are in the middle of the town and well worth a visit. This is where Robert the Bruce and the Scottish nobles signed the Declaration of Arbroath, which was a seminal moment in Scottish history. Glamis Castle, childhood home of the Queen Mother, and several National Trust properties are nearby, and there's a wonderful wildlife centre at Montrose (20 mins away). You can explore the old sailing ship "Discovery" in Dundee (30 mins away), which took Robert Scott to the Antarctic.
2 country parks (15 mins away) offer watersports and lovely walks, and the Arbroath cliffs are great for birdwatching. More challenging walks in the Angus Glens are within an hour's drive. Lots of opportunities for cycling, with quiet roads and great scenery.

About Us

I emigrated to Scotland from Australia 7 years ago and love living here! I work in an academic library and am also doing a postgrad university degree. I enjoy reading, theatre, singing, walking and cycling, and spending time with friends. I'm heavily involved in my local community - church, choral society, credit union, local area partnership, etc.
My son Derek (16), who will be travelling with me, is in the final years of secondary school. He's a keen surfer and percussion player, and is plays in several bands and orchestras. My two daughters are both living away from home now; one at university and the other travelling and working.
We've done several home exchanges in the UK and overseas, both simultaneous and non-simultaneous, and have had a great experience every time. The people who've come here have all loved it and we get requests for repeats. :-)

Destination

We want an exchange in or near Newquay in Cornwall in July-August 2008, with good access to the beaches there - we Aussies are hanging out for some time in the surf! :-)
We're willing to do a non-simultaneous exchange, but our dates are limited by school holidays and other commitments.
We would like to swap cars as well as houses if you're up for that - we have a Ford Focus estate (manual).
