Description

Our home sleeps 2 in the main bedroom and 2 on a fold out bed in the second bedroom (baby's room with a cot). The living room sofa converts to a bed also.

The third bedroom has been converted into a study. There are two complete bathrooms (including one bathtub), but the best feature is the lovely sun drenched living / dining room with it's large windows that open up to allow in as much sun and breeze as possible.

The apartment is in a street that is quiet at night (sometimes hard to find in Madrid), given that it is an area smothered with shops and cafes, but the late night bars and the occassional nightclub are at least one street away. The suburb is called Goya within Barrio Salamanca, generally considered the most desirable Barrio in which to live in Madrid. We are 2 minutes walk from Goya metro station as well as a number of bus lines, giving excellent access to all other parts of Madrid; but people who love to walk will find the apartment so well located that most of Madrid that is worth seeing is less than 45 minutes by foot. Retiro park is 10 minutes walk to the south, the bull fighting stadium is 20 minutes walk east, the exclusive boutiques and good restaurants start almost on the doorstep and continue for about 10 blocks, mainly to the west. The historic centre and most active nightlife are just over half an hours walk (or 10 minutes by metro or 5-7 euros in a taxi) to the south west.

Basically a clean and tidy apartment in a great location.

Neighborhood

The good points of the neighbourhood have been covered above, so I'll cover the bad points here. Firstly, don't even think of bringing a car (I actually think this is a good point). When you live this centrally and the public transaport is so frequent and safe (even at night), and the traffic jams are so horrendous and the parking spaces are virtually non existent, a car is much more trouble than it is worth. If you really must bring a car, then once you find a parking space, just leave it there for the duration of your stay in Madrid as you won't need it again until you leave. Even though we live without a car, we have found houseswaps in the past in non city locations have been much more succesful when a car has been offered as part of the swap.

Other than that, Barrio Salamanca really lives up to it's reputation as the best address in Madrid.

About Us

We are an expat couple (non smokers) in our mid thirties with one child - a girl born in May 2007). I am a travel industry executive who was relocated to Spain by my employer, and my wife fills her days with Spanish lessons, Flamenco lessons, painting classes, and being involved with a group of other expat wives. We don't have any pets ourselves, but would be happy to look after someone else's pet as part of an exchange. We take a lot of pride in our apartment, and so long as people are respectful of that, then we are very easy people to get along with.

We are only interested in swaps within Europe, especially within Spain, France or The Netherlands.

Destination

So long as your place is easy and inexpensive to get to, then we will consider long weekends, or a week away anywhere within Spain or Portugal. We have been living in Spain for around 2 years and would love to see more of this country. We don't plan on taking extra holidays in Europe in 2008, but if the home is nice, the location is interesting, and it is relatively easy to get to, then we are happy to think about it.

The next major holiday for which we are yet to line up a houseswap is Australia in 2009. We are looking for 2-3 weeks in country Victoria (ideally near the beach), or possibly Melbourne in late February, and then up to the first 2 weeks of March in Sydney, ideally eastern, southern or inner west suburbs.
